About us
Porter Lodge No. 284 was constituted under the jurisdiction of The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania on January 30, 1854 and was named after Brother James Madison Porter, District Deputy Grand Master of Easton Pennsylvania.

Porter Lodge was originally constituted in Gross Hall, a part of what was then called the United States Hotel situated on the northeast corner of Front and Race Streets in a part of Catasauqua known as Biery's Port. The Lodge continued to meet in Gross Hall for fourteen years and one month, until February 14, 1868.
Porter Lodge then moved to the Fuller building at Front and Church streets for a period of twenty-four years from 1868 to 1892, then to a new hall at 513 Front Street above Bridge Street, where it remained for 85 years. Then, in May of 1975 the Lodge purchased a building in North Catasauqua known as the Charotin Social Hall where it held its first its stated meeting of October 1977.

Things you should know
HAZING-There is absolutely no hazing permitted in the Masonic fraternity.
ATTENDANCE-There are no attendance requirements.
RELIGION-Freemasonry is not a religion. Your religious beliefs are your own. You must, however, believe in a Supreme Being.
A SECRET SOCIETY-Freemasonry is not a secret society. Our members do not hide their affiliation with us. Our buildings are well-marked and often available for community use. While there are a few confidential hand grips and passwords used to confirm membership, we have no secrets concerning our purpose and programs. Many of our activities are open to family and friends.
MEMORIZATION-Like all fraternities, Freemasonry has impressive ritual ceremonies that date back centuries. These are presented from memory by officers who are developing their leadership and public speaking skills. There is no requirement to memorize any ritual, but members can choose to participate as they wish.
